It’s not ‘House of Cards,’ but local leaders will grill federal lawmakers this weekend

Metro Chamber Avatar

The Sacramento Metro Chamber embarks on its annual Capitol-to-Capitol program this weekend, with 336 civic and business leaders flying to Washington D.C. to discuss a range of issues with federal lawmakers.

The Chamber promotes the event as a way for residents across the region to bring a unified policy message to Congress and the White House. The Chamber group has formed 11 teams specializing in different policy areas, and plans to hold over 200 meetings on issues such as public transit, flood protection and homelessness. The program, which also serves as an annual networking event for Sacramento’s business community, runs from April 9 to April 13.

“We are leading strongly this year with an infrastructure perspective,” said Scott Shapiro, managing partner of Downey Brand and chair of this year’s Cap-to-Cap.

For example, to cover facility improvements on Sacramento International Airport, the group members will ask Congress to double the cap on fees levied on airplane passengers, up to $8.50 per flight. The chamber views airport maintenance and upgrades as an essential tool for business recruitment, Shapiro said.

The group’s complete set of policy papers can be found here.
