Comstock’s Magazine: Capital Region Cares

Metro Foundation Avatar

There is much to be celebrated in the local nonprofit community. This year, a record $7.2 million was raised on the Big Day of Giving, a campaign of the Sacramento Region Community Foundation to create awareness of area nonprofits. Since its launch in 2013, BDoG has raised $23 million.

Health Net Federal Services donated $150,000 to Habitat for Humanity of Greater Sacramento to sponsor the first-ever “Veteran Home Build Project.” This is the largest financial home sponsorship donation from a single donor in Habitat for Humanity of Greater Sacramento’s 31-year history. The Sacramento Native American Health Center was awarded a $1.25 million grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration to develop a community-based system for addressing mental health needs among American Indian/Alaskan Native youth. In response to the devastating wildfires throughout California, Wells Fargo Bank and Bank of America each donated over $100,000 to the American Red Cross’ California wildfire relief efforts.

Adding to these and so many other wonderful philanthropic efforts, Comstock’s was happy to debut its 2017-18 Capital Region Cares annual publication on Nov. 8 at the National Philanthropy Day event at the Hyatt Regency. This is the 22nd edition of CRC, which celebrates the great work done across the region by nonprofits, their donors, and volunteers. We were excited to see The American Red Cross’ name drawn for our accompanying annual $10,000 give-away; given recent events in Santa Rosa, its work is more important than ever.

What causes do you contribute to? Consider helping to fund housing for the homeless, or for mothers and children in crisis. Reach out to the disabled or veterans when announcing your next job vacancy. Fund the dreams of terminally-ill children. Support a safe space that offers myriad after-school activities for at-risk youth. Nonprofit employees and volunteers need support from donors and partners to make a positive difference in the quality of life for those in need.

Our region is a very generous one — we can all help in one way or another.
