Sacramento Children’s Home

SCH Main Building PhotoIn 1867, the city of Sacramento was growing fast—as was the population of children living on its riverbanks. Recognizing a common need, citizens came together to address the problem. Less than a year later, the Sacramento Children’s Home was funded and built on the corner of L and 18th Street. Initially, an orphanage, and later developed as a children’s farm association and home for the abandoned, the Sacramento Children’s Home has since been dedicated to supporting Sacramento’s most vulnerable children and families for nearly 150 years.

Today, the Sacramento Children’s Home is the most comprehensive child and family service organization in Sacramento County. Throughout its long history, it’s been at the forefront of trauma-informed care and developing new ways to improve the outcomes of children and families through community-based prevention and early intervention programs.

Last year, the organization served more than 6,200 children and 4,600 families through a comprehensive spectrum of residential, community-based, mental health and educational programs. Through eight programs at six sites in the county, the Sacramento Children’s Home offers prevention, early intervention and treatment programs to strengthen families and stop the generational cycle of child abuse and neglect. From educating parents of infants and toddlers to teaching independent living skills to young adults, the Sacramento Children’s Home helps address the widest range of needs of any child and family service organization in the county.

To celebrate its 150 year legacy as a strong regional asset, the Sacramento Children’s Home is holding three key events. We hope that you will join the Sacramento Metro Chamber of Commerce in celebrating with the Sacramento Children’s Home and help ensure that SCH has another 150 year tradition of collaboration and care in protecting children, strengthening families and improving the outlook for future generations.
